If you'd like to get a taste of Durham student life, check out Durham University, located 0.9 mi (1.5 km) from central Durham. Our travelers also like this historical area for its riverfront setting.
Admired for its university life and cathedral, Durham features attractions such as Gala Theatre Durham and Durham Cathedral. This welcoming city has something for everyone including its rich culture, restaurants, and sights like Adventure Valley and Diggerland.
Much of the city is walkable and the historic attractions are well worth seeing. It is clearly a university city but that gives a vibrancy missing in other cities. Parts of the city are a step back in time and are well worth exploring, day or night.

Cathedral and castle is a great place to visit. Take a guided tour if you're really interested. Eating at Fabios is excellent and great service and friendly and atmosphere. Really good breakfast at Chapters. Indoor market worth a nosey too.

Lots of history all around as well as new areas. Fairly good for clothes shopping if you like EWM, Next, Monsoon and New Look. Tesco's is the local supermarket for the many students here. Pleasant walk along the river when it's good weather.

Love Durham but not brilliant for wheelchair users as lots of cobbled streets and steps into coffee shops and restaurants.

Very nice old town. Well worth a visit. Cathedral, castle, river walks. Lovely coffee shops, bars and restaurants.
"View of the river from the hotel room is great. I'd recommend booking a room with a view of the river. You can relax and eat while watching the world go by. Very friendly staff. We even requested to check out late and they accommodated us for that. "
"Very nice property. sorrounded by nice golf courses and conveniently located near the city center. The bar and steak house are worth a try. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The staff is beyond friendly and attentive."
"Very nice and modern hotel in the centre of Newcastle with everything on the doorstep. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the place was spotless. The breakfast option was tasty and plentiful and the dining area was clean and comfortable. My only suggestion would be to have Worcestershire sauce as an option, it would have made all the difference!
The room was quiet (as requested) and the bed was very comfortable. It was very warm so the air conditioning was welcome. The only downside to the room was the lack of a fridge/mini bar to keep things cool which I would expect as standard. Other than that, I can’t fault this hot and would recommend it."
