Not great.
In the first room there were major structural problems. Beams were rotting and being held up by paint. The floor bent and creaked. The plumbing couldn’t even do a full flush. I was glad no bed bugs but there were broken windows and a heavy mildew smell.

Horrible Experience
This place was horrible. Poor lighting. No AC. Dirty Rooms. told it takes 10-15 minutes to heat up water so if we needed hot water sooner, they offered a public shower on the main floor. I did not stay here! Checked out right after I checked in.

Keep your expectations very low!
Down the creek stairs, and once you get past the construction site, you can make your way to the room. Not a bad size. I wouldn’t say it felt “clean” but tried to have a shower and it pretty much “spat” at me. Was told I could go back up stairs to shower up there.nno thanks. The noise… all night the birds or whatever just drove me insane! So loud!! The “continental breakfast” was a begal or a small stoggy blueberry muffin. Some dodge looking egg. No coffee but creamer out for coffee. Weird. For the price, and I somehow paid a lot less than “advertised” on a special deal. It was still 3 times more than what I’d have wanted to pay.

The building is clean but old, the roof can use a good cleaning and fresh paint. No issue with hot water for shower. Breakfast is ok, fresh fruit, bagel, muffins.

Do better
The room we were in was a bit dirty such as a lot of dust and stuff on the bed that we ended up wiping off aswell as under the red was a used q-tip and more trash, more importantly the pillow looked stained or maybe it was mold we didn’t know, the blanket that was provided in the room was one of those blue moving blankets that’s it, that and a very thin sheet was all we had, we even tried to go buy our own blankets for the night however the stores were closed at the time. Will not be back that’s for sure

The hotel was a dump , and the most unhygienic place I have ever been to , the bathroom was full of bugs and the actual maintainace was very pathetic , paints peeling everywhere , the facilities were horrible , they did not provide fresh towels , they left damp Towels on the bed , the I have lots of picture to share , when asked they were rude and asked to contact Expedia , this was the single Most worst experience of my life , it was very unhygienic , unsanitary and completely unsafe , Thai property should be removed from your listing , bare minimum checks should have been done by your team , this is just not acceptable , we had no choice but to stay as it was a late check in and there were no options , Expedia needs to take responsibility and act

Very convenient spot to swim the turtles by driving for a few minutes towards the airport, a great breakfast with fruits and homemade cakes, overall a very good deal if you enjoy staying in a vintage building with a bit reduced comfort

Great staff. It is a rustic hotel (no AC, TV, sloped floors, etc) But it was comfortable with a very nice staff. Don’t let first impressions scare you off. I loved falling asleep to the frogs and other night life.

Do not believe any above 2 star review. The worst ever and I have been around the world. I continue to report fake reviews. I suspect the pictures over a decade old. Dirty, moldy, buggy, should be condemned.

I enjoyed my first night, so i extended my stay by two days. Don't listen to the folks who prefer a sterile "downtown" hotel experience - The Wild Ginger IS Hawai'i. Historic building, amazing staff, and the convenience of being right on the edge of downtown Hilo. Minutes from lava tubes, waterfalls, and beaches. Will definitely stay here again next time I'm on the Big Island!

It's an older building, one of the oldest operating hotels on the island. Don't pass this one up: just outside of downtown Hilo, affodrable, and the kind of character your want in a room in paradise. Hot water takes a bit to get going, so be patient, but that's the only drawback. The staff are amazing, the courtyard is a beautiful micro slice of the island, and the rooms are more than sufficient! Biggest fridge in a hotel anywhere yet for me! A five minute drive or 10 minute walk from downtown: either way, it's a great lodging experience. If I'm ever here again, i know where I'll be staying. Mahalo, Wild Ginger!

This was not worth what we paid per night. The smell of the room was awful. The fan and light did not work. Had to get two fans from the front and they were also dirty. Would not recommend.

One star because at least I didn’t see a cockroach
The bathroom floor and shower curtain were covered in green and black mildew. When we alerted the front desk the sink was completely clogged, their “repair” was to remove the clog at least enough so it could slowly drain over a matter of hours. Spider visitors gave us great company along the ceilings, probably being fed by the bugs coming in the rusty, old window screen inserts. Patio lounge chairs were strewn around unclean. The children’s “play house” had a danger sign to “keep out” - it looked like it may fall over at any moment. And it was close to a busy street with the sound of heavy traffic. Overall, the accommodations didn’t evoke romantic or rustic, old-times Hilo. They were decrepit and in disrepair. DO NOT believe the pictures they post online.
