Good hotel. The bar and breakfast could have been.
Really lovely hotel. You needed to request a kettle and return it at check out. Where’s the coffee machine was in situ. They offered a fridge with complimentary drinks, but they were standard, I have food intolerances which meant that half the drinks were of no use to me. So it would have been better to have a choice. The swimming pool and spa was lovely. But most of the sauna and steam rooms were for access of 16+ and nude, which wasn’t ideal for a single mother. My daughter is only 8. The breakfast was good. Amazing selection of teas. The egg station was good. The cups could have been placed near the tea, not just next to the coffee. Ingredients and labels for food could have been clearer. It would have been good to be able to reheat food and drinks. A microwave for use of guests would have been good. It would have been nice if a simple rosti with bacon/ egg was available at the bar or restaurant and I would have liked it if a portion of chips and salads were also available at the bar.

Hard pass
We stayed in 5 different hotels during our trip to Switzerland and this is the only hotel where we have anything negative to say. The shower broke and fell on my daughter’s head and management offered us a voucher for a future stay for the incident. We won’t ever be back, so declined. The tub was disgusting and moldy as well. We tried calling the front desk four separate times but they would never answer so we had to walk down to reception. There were 2-3 people just standing around so no reason the phones couldn’t be answered. The hotel restaurant had terrible service and food. Reviews online seemed good so maybe because we were there in shoulder season everything was subpar? We ordered 3 steaks and they were all severely overcooked. The 2 burgers ordered at our table were essentially raw - they apparently got the temperatures backwards for the entrees. The spa was also subpar. We really don’t have anything nice to say about this hotel other than the views were amazing - but you can get the same view at many other hotels so I would strongly encourage you to look at those.

Positives: The view of Eiger mountain from this hotel is outstanding. I had a balcony room overlooking this incredible view and also spent some time outside on the hotel terrace with the same view. A cozy fireplace in the lobby and some amazing cheese fondue in the restaurant rounded out my stay. Free city bus passes and a hotel shuttle from/to the train station makes it easy to get around. Bathroom was clean and modern with a deep tub/shower and great water pressure. The staff was great and did whatever they could to make my stay better. Location was also great if you want to go up Grindelwald First! The hotel is right across the street from where you catch the gondola. Negatives: Rooms are rustic and have NO A/C! Somehow I missed that in all the reviews I read before booking. If it’s a sunny day, that room heats up. They provide a fan, which helped, but the only cover on the beds are these thick, very hot duvets. Also be aware that this hotel is tour bus central with big tour buses pulling up every day and out every morning. Of course, Grindelwald in general felt like tour bus central and was very crowded on the streets even in late October! It’s a very touristy place with lots of souvenir type businesses.

This is an amazing hotel perfectly situated directly across from Grindelwald First. When I say directly across, I mean you can be at Grindelwald First in less than 5 mins. Less than that if you can walk a slight incline quickly. You are also perfectly situated by the shops and restaurants! The hotel is beautiful! The upgraded rooms are amazing and the amenities are to die for. I had a single upgraded room that had a balcony facing the Wetterhorn. I would enjoy my coffee on the balcony each morning and enjoy the views. They have a coffee machine in the room, complimentary beverages in the mini fridge and even a little piece of chocolate on your pillow! Their spa is unlike anything I’ve seen or experience before. You must go! Their breakfast buffet (included in your stay) was some of the best breakfast food I’ve had since being in Switzerland. They even have an omelette station. They offer a shuttle service that saves you an uphill/downhill walk with luggage once you leave the train and when you need to get back to the train for departure. I could go on and on but I would come back to this place 100 times over.

The Sunstar Hotel Grindelwald is a wonderful place to stay. The Front Desk Staff, the Hotel Driver's all were pleasant and helpful. The hotel is a 2 minute walk to the First Cliff Walk which was quite convenient.
